Memorial Day 2022 – A Time To Support Our freedoms
I’m writing this article early on Memorial Day 2022. It’s a testimony to Flag Day 2019, when I finally went out to buy a flag and display it from the front of my home.
I’ve always been a fan of history. I have recognized for years that those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it (https://www.azquotes.com/author/12976-George_Santayana). However, during the past three years, I have become immersed in history, recognizing, as have many others, how close we are to losing the precious gift that our veterans have protected for us.
I could go into the reasons here for the ongoing decay of our Grand Experiment in Governance, but, I’ll save those for a separate article. Here, I’d rather display pride and respect for all those who have fought to keep our freedoms, not just in recent wars and conflicts, but since the 1700’s, when brave men and women sacrificed so much to actually gain those freedoms.
Today is the day when many give moving tributes to fallen service members. This morning, however, I heard a segment on Fox News in which the anchor desk members commented about an op-ed by Jack Carr. a retired Navy SEAL and a New York Times best-selling author. The gist of Carr’s piece is contained in this print / audio story from Fox – https://www.foxnews.com/opinion/memorial-day-veterans-sacrifice-america. The message is brief, but strong, and a lot more compelling than what I am writing here. It urges ALL OF US to remember the fallen, not just today, but EVERY DAY. There’s also a video clip about a double amputee and how he views Veterans Day [Semper Fi and American Fun (https://www.thefund.org)]. Retired Marine Sergeant Eddie Wright explained how the fund is helping tens of thousands of servicemen who didn’t die (but were seriously wounded in mind, spirit, and body) and their families.
There are many other non-governmental groups helping the service community. Unfortunately, there aren’t enough people (just folks like you and me) who take a minute out of the day on Memorial Day to honor our Nation’s real heroes.
At 3:00pm today (local time), musicians from across the Nation, online and locally, will honor those who died in service to America by playing Taps. This National Moment of Remembrance – https://www.tapsacrossamerica.org/ – was actually codified into U.S. law in 2000.
In advance, thanks for recognizing our servicemembers (those who passed, those who have been injured, and those who are suffering from mental anguish…as well as their family members) on this special day.
When I finish this story and post it, I’m going to visit a local veterans memorial; then later today, I plan to take time out of bridge-playing to listen to the playing of Taps. You can join in the National Memorial Taps event by finding a YouTube video or just visiting this web site – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v_XtbSzJe0&t=171s – filmed for the 2020 (during COVID) event.
In closing, I want my readers to know that I practice what I preach. I, routinely, go out of my way, even in distant cities and towns, to say “thanks” to any first responder I may meet. They truly do appreciate knowing that some of us…hopefully many of us…appreciate their service. The “thanks” go out, not just to first responders, but those behind-the-scenes staff who support the first responders and all of those wearing U.S. military uniforms.
So, please, make EVERY DAY a memorial day to those who gave and still give us our freedoms.
As always, please feel free to share this article with others — https://bit.ly/3NGM2zk.
