THEWEATHERMOGIL:: Western U.S. drought update
California’s exceptional drought was in the news a lot in 2015. Recently, however, a series of storms has brought much needed rainfall and snowfall to the state. As a result, drought conditions have lessened in California and adjacent states (Fig. 1) during the past three months.
During the next seven days, more storminess is slated for the Golden State. In fact, three separate systems may be affecting California. Quantitative Precipitation Forecasts (QPFs) indicate several inches of rainfall are possible in many areas. Mountain areas will see heavy rain and snow (Fig. 2), with some places in the Sierra Nevada Mountains seeing four to six FEET of snow. Coastal mountains and hills may see the greatest rainfall numbers.
This rainfall and snowfall will further alleviate drought conditions across the West. Still, the West is living, “on the edge.” A very large population, with incredible water needs (human, recreation, nature and agriculture) will ensure a return to extreme / exceptional drought. sooner rather than later. Natural rainfall and snowfall is simply insufficient for the needs of this highly populated, multi-faceted, region.
